It is after 3 in the afternoon when I arrive at the outskirts of Aldona, a village in North Goa. It has the population of only 6000 people. In the heart of North Goa, this quaint little village is serenaded by gentle backwaters, and home to the friendliest locals. On a weekday afternoon, when I drove there, the locals were all tucked in for their afternoon siesta in their old Portuguese homes Aldona has its roots in Haldi or Turmeric – a crop that was the planted here in this village. As per an Aldona resident, I spoke to – it comes from the word ‘Hal’ that in many Indian languages including Konkani means plough. He argued that this is an agricultural village named after the agricultural instrument. Narrow winding lanes, masses of bright bougainvillea flowers, and overhanging wooden balconies all together made me feel I was walking in Old Havana or New Orleans’ Latin Quarter. This is Fontainhas, the Latin Quarter of Goa Brightly colored houses are a characteristic feature of the Portuguese architectural influence, and Fontainhas is full of them. Deep azure blue houses with white trim, mustard yellow houses with slate-tiled roofs, maroon red houses with dark wood doors and balconies. Each one is unique, and many have names emblazoned on white-and-blue tiled plaques. Walk through history, and discover the Portuguese colonial period in Goa. Goa has multitude of places beckoning you to explore hence With the influx of tourists to the coastal state, Goa is over crowded all the times. But that doesn’t mean you follow the bandwagon. So I decided to escape the crowds and savour some truly unique experiences in Goa Everyone goes to Old Goa to explore churches. If you want to avoid crowds then cross the main road near St Basilica and walk for 2 minutes. You’ll come across several dilapidated and beautiful churches. The best part is that you will probably have them all to yourself as I did 😉 Spend your time exploring them and eventually walk to the Chapel of our Lady of the Mount and wait for the sun to set. I read about the first snow fall of this season in Oslo today and I thought how time flies. It's been 7 months when I visited Norway and surprisingly it was snowing in April too. This panoramic view shows how Oslo transforms into a white Wonderland during winters and even extends to spring, Well I guess 8 months in a year.
